Polyester (PET) microfibers
Polyester is the most prolific microplastic shedder of all synthetic fabrics. A single wash releases approximately 700,000 microfibers. Worn during exercise when pores are open and body temperature is elevated, polyester fabric maximizes transdermal absorption of plastic particles and chemical additives.
Antimony trioxide (polyester catalyst)
Used as a catalyst in polyester manufacturing. Residues remain in finished fabric. Antimony is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the IARC and has been detected in sweat collected from people wearing polyester clothing.
Formaldehyde (wrinkle/performance finish)
Many performance fabrics are treated with formaldehyde-based resins to maintain shape and moisture-wicking properties. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen (IARC Group 1). It off-gasses from fabric during wear, particularly when heated by body temperature.
