How scores are calculated
Materials (40%): How plastic-free the product is — raw materials, construction, and coatings.
Packaging (20%): Is the product packaged in plastic? Is it recyclable?
Transparency (20%): Does the brand disclose ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing?
Durability (20%): How long does it last? Longer-lasting products reduce plastic waste over time.
This is a rating of this specific product only — not the company. Other products from this brand may score differently.

Conventional chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and other UV filters that are absorbed through the skin and detected in blood, urine, and breast milk. The FDA has found that oxybenzone reaches blood concentrations 277 times higher than the safety threshold after a single day of use. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are not absorbed through the skin.
Why We Rated It This Way
EltaMD UV Clear contains zinc oxide (safe) and octinoxate (a chemical UV filter that is absorbed through the skin). A popular dermatologist recommendation but not a purely mineral formulation. For a purely mineral option, choose 100% zinc oxide sunscreens.
