How scores are calculated
Materials (40%): How plastic-free the product is — raw materials, construction, and coatings.
Packaging (20%): Is the product packaged in plastic? Is it recyclable?
Transparency (20%): Does the brand disclose ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing?
Durability (20%): How long does it last? Longer-lasting products reduce plastic waste over time.
This is a rating of this specific product only — not the company. Other products from this brand may score differently.

Car seats are made primarily from plastic and foam, both of which can contain flame retardants, PFAS, and other toxic chemicals. Children spend significant time in car seats, often in hot cars where chemical off-gassing is accelerated. The foam padding in car seats has been found to contain halogenated flame retardants linked to neurodevelopmental harm.
Why We Rated It This Way
Chicco's KeyFit 35 meets all safety standards but has not published flame retardant testing. For a product used by newborns and infants, the lack of chemical transparency is concerning. Clek's infant car seat is a safer alternative.
